Flint Hills Breadbasket helps provide meals to community members.

The Flint Hills Breadbasket has been in operation in Manhattan since 1983. The Breadbasket has an average of 22,000+ visits every year, which has doubled in the past six years, and their busiest year reached over 27,000 visits. Monday through Friday community members visit the Breadbasket to receive food and a food voucher that can be used to pick up more things from a church that afternoon. There are five local churches donate their time and space to help provide food to the community members. Maribeth Kieffer, executive director, says that the volunteers and donors are heroes to the Flint Hills Breadbasket and they couldn’t do it without their support. Donors and volunteers are all different ages. Just recently the Breadbasket received a donation of 137 pounds of food and $135 from a child who asked for donations at his birthday instead of birthday presents. The Breadbasket also receives donations from local grocery stores and works very closely with Kansas State University.

The Flint Hills Breadbasket requires accountability from their recipients. Community members are  allowed to pick up food once a week. The amount of food given to the individual depends on the size of the family and the availability of the food. Families are given enough food to feed their family three meals per day for one week.  Every week they are able to return to the Breadbasket for another week’s worth of meals. Thanks to the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, the Flint Hills Breadbasket was able to purchase perishable foods for their community members. These foods include, milk, margarine, eggs and meat.  The Flint Hills Breadbasket is its busiest during the winter months and can always use donations. If you’re interested in donating to the Flint Hills Breadbasket, all donations are always welcome. You can also visit the Flint Hills Breadbasket Facebook page to find out what foods they are in most need of at any specific time.
