Girl Scouts are experiencing fun outdoor activities during the summer at Camp Daisy Hindman!

The core of the Girl Scouts is to let their girls experience the outdoors in a safe setting. Last summer 1,000 girls were able to do just that at Camp Daisy Hindman. The community foundation’s grants helped girls from Geary and Riley County attend camp. There were 24 girl scouts from Riley County that attended camp and 11 from Geary County. The founder of Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low, believed that “any girl, no matter her race, socioeconomic status, religion or abilities, could be a Girl Scout.”

Girl Scouts can earn their way to camp with Cookie Dough. After the girls sell their cookies, they can opt out of receiving a prize for their hard work and opt into receiving Cookie Dough that allows them to earn credit toward camp. Grants help keep the costs of camp tuition down so that any girl can attend camp.

Camp Daisy Hindman runs from early June through early August and gives girls of all ages the opportunity to attend camp. There are camps for young girls with a parent, You & Me: Ladies, or You & Me: Gentleman as well as Mini Camp options. For the older girls, there are week long and longer camps. Camp Daisy Hindman offers many outdoor activities during the summer including, archery, horses, hiking, spray water park, canoeing and kayaking, STEM activities and s’mores.

Different grants, including the grant from the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, that Girl Scouts received help them provide healthy food to the girls while they are at camp. At Camp Daisy Hindman the food program teaches girls about healthy food, how to cook healthy food as well as learning about food safety and disease prevention.

Camp Daisy Hindman has big plans to grow in future years to make it an even better experience for the Girl Scouts. They are planning different excursion programs for girls to go on as well as building a natural playground.
