Affiliate Foundations

Our partner community foundations are led by a board of local community leaders. These foundations coordinate fundraising efforts to develop grant-making resources for their specific community interest areas. The Greater Manhattan Community Foundation provides investment management, fund accounting, and administrative staff support for each of these partner foundations.

Creating a partner foundation under the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation umbrella may be a good alternative for smaller communities interested in a program that will uphold and support their local nonprofits. A partner foundation, designated as an affiliate or associate, is a distinct legal entity affiliated with the GMCF. As such, the affiliate or associate foundation qualifies for a tax status not granted to private foundations.

In addition to having its own board of directors, a partner foundation can have its own letterhead, checking account, and investment manager. It can even publish its own annual report. Partner foundations through GMCF provide a simple, cost-effective way to ensure that the mission of your organization is not eroded by time and overhead.

The partner program at GMCF offers three options for affiliation:

  • An affiliate foundation is one that utilizes the 501(c)(3) status offered through the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.
