1.    What is the GMCF 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund?

The 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund at the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation has been established to receive donations to benefit those in the Manhattan area who are in great need as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that the impact of the coronavirus will make it financially challenging for area non-profits and public agencies to meet the needs for recovery from this disastrous event. The 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund will focus on the short and long-term recovery of our neighbors and partners. The fund is able to accept contributions from individual donors, corporations and foundations.

2.    Why support both short-term and long-term recovery?  Why not just immediate relief?

When a disaster strikes, on average, 70% of donations are directed to immediate relief and a significantly smaller portion goes to recovery and rebuilding, a process that can take many years. Long after media attention has shifted, Greater Manhattan Community Foundation will provide support to address the significant long-term critical needs of our local nonprofits, public entities and individuals they serve.

3.    Why Greater Manhattan Community Foundation?

Greater Manhattan Community Foundation is credible, transparent and connected. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, GMCF has established the2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund. For over 20 years GMCF has enriched the lives of the people in our communities through philanthropy. We are a source of funding for local nonprofits and public entities, thus long-standing relationships are already in place. We are committed to building philanthropy and connecting people who care with causes that matter.

4.    Who will the COVID-19 Recovery Fund support?

The COVID-19 Recovery Fund will support non-profit organizations and public entities that have a defined role in short-term and long-term recovery efforts by providing critical services including things such as emergency food distribution, shelter and long-term housing, emotional and spiritual care, economic and rental assistance, education, healthcare, and more to survivors of the disaster. These non-profits and public entities will provide direct support to survivors and will need the capacity to grow their services to meet these needs.

In addition, our non-profit organizations are in need of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in order to reopen their doors safely. Funds from the COVID-19 Recovery Fund will help purchase required PPE to make available at no charge to the various local non-profits. It is our hope that this will allow them to safely help those in our community who are most in need of assistance.

5.    How can I make a charitable donation?

You can support the 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund in the following ways:

6.    How can my organization receive a grant from the COVID-19 Recovery Fund?

The initial distribution of funds will be made to organizations “on the ground” providing direct assistance and who will be there during long-term recovery operations.

The Community Foundation plans for additional distributions of funds in the months to come.  This will be an open and responsive application process available online by clicking here.  Grant making decisions will be made utilizing a diverse group of community stakeholders.  The 2020 COVID-19 Recovery Fund will continue to seek funds in support of these longer-term recovery efforts.

7.    I’ve been impacted by coronavirus and I’m looking for support.  Can I apply to the COVID-19 Recovery Fund?

The COVID-19 Recovery Fund was specifically set up to provide grants to our non-profit partners, who in turn work with individuals and families. If you are in need of assistance, please reach out to Shepherd’s Crossing.
