One Question Every Donor Is Asking (Even If They Never Say It)
Donors don't just give because an organization has a need. They give because they believe their gift will make a difference.
That is why one of the most valuable exercises your organization can do is step back and ask a simple question:
Why should someone invest in our mission?
Your answer is often called a "case for support," but don't let the name intimidate you. At its core, it is simply the story that explains why your work matters.
A strong case for support answers questions your donors are already thinking:
- Why does our organization exist?
- Why is this work important right now?
- What makes our organization uniquely positioned to help?
- What difference does a gift make?
- What future are we working toward together?
If your answer focuses only on the services you provide or the dollars you need, you may be missing the opportunity to inspire someone to give.
For example, instead of saying:
"We served 500 families this year."
Go one step further.
"Because of generous supporters, 500 families had access to healthy meals, reducing food insecurity and creating greater stability at home."
The first is a statistic.
The second is impact.
One simple exercise can help strengthen your message. Take one accomplishment from this year and keep asking yourself, "So what?"
- We awarded scholarships.
- So what?
- Students had access to higher education.
- So what?
- They gained opportunities that can benefit them, their families, and our community for years to come.
By digging a little deeper, you'll move beyond reporting what happened and begin communicating why it matters.
Whether you're writing a grant proposal, preparing for Giving Tuesday, or talking with a potential donor over coffee, a clear case for support helps people understand the difference their generosity can make.
The good news? You don't need a polished document to get started. You simply need to be able to answer one question with confidence:
Why does our work matter, and why should someone want to be part of it?
