Your Community Already Has a Story. Tell It Well.

Posted Tuesday August 11, 2026

Every community has a story worth investing in.

Your community foundation helps tell that story by connecting generous people with the opportunities that will strengthen your town for generations to come.

As you prepare for donor conversations, Match Day, newsletters, or year-end giving, consider whether your message answers five simple questions:

  • Why does our community foundation exist?
  • Why is this the right time to invest?
  • Why should someone give through our community foundation?
  • What difference does a gift make?
  • What future are we building together?

When these questions are answered consistently, fundraising becomes less about asking for donations and more about inviting people to invest in the future of their community.

One easy way to strengthen your message is to shift from talking about activities to talking about impact.

Instead of saying: "We awarded grants to local nonprofits."

Try saying: "Local investments helped strengthen nonprofits that improve the quality of life for people across our community."

Or instead of: "We are building our endowment."

Say: "We're building a permanent source of generosity that will continue strengthening our community for generations."

That subtle shift helps donors see that they are contributing to something lasting.

The next time you're writing an article, speaking at a civic club, or meeting with a potential donor, remember this: People don't invest because they understand how a community foundation works. They invest because they believe in the future you're inviting them to help create.

Keep your message focused on your community, the people you serve, and the future you're building together. Those are the stories that inspire generosity.
