What Happens When Generosity Stays Local
One of the most rewarding parts of working in philanthropy is witnessing the many ways people choose to give back. Every donor has a story. Every gift has a purpose. And every act of generosity has the potential to create meaningful change.
Over the past several years, donor-advised funds have become an increasingly popular charitable giving tool. While donor-advised funds offer flexibility and simplicity, I believe their greatest value is not found in the financial benefits they provide. Their greatest value is found in what happens when generosity stays connected to the community.
A donor-advised fund allows individuals and families to make charitable contributions, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to charitable organizations over time. In many ways, it functions as a charitable savings account. But at its best, a donor-advised fund becomes much more than that.
It becomes a vehicle for thoughtful, intentional philanthropy.
Through a donor-advised fund, donors have the opportunity to learn about community needs, explore causes they care about, and support organizations making a difference. Some use their funds to respond to urgent needs. Others support long-term community priorities. Many involve children and grandchildren in grantmaking decisions, helping create a family tradition of generosity that extends across generations.
What makes community foundation donor-advised funds unique is their connection to place.
National charitable organizations and large financial institutions offer donor-advised funds, but community foundations offer something different: local knowledge. Our team lives and works in the communities we serve. We know the organizations, understand emerging challenges, and see firsthand the opportunities that exist to strengthen our region.
That local connection helps transform charitable giving from a transaction into a relationship.
Often, donors come to us with a broad interest in an issue such as education, healthcare, the arts, housing, or youth development. Through conversations and community insight, we can help connect those interests with organizations and initiatives making a measurable impact close to home.
Just as importantly, donor-advised funds allow generosity to remain flexible. Community needs change over time. New opportunities emerge. Challenges arise that no one could have anticipated years earlier. A donor-advised fund gives individuals and families the ability to respond thoughtfully while remaining connected to the causes they care about most.
At the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, we believe philanthropy is strongest when it is rooted in relationships. Relationships between donors and nonprofits. Relationships between generations. Relationships between people and the communities they call home.
A donor-advised fund is simply one tool that helps make those relationships stronger.
When generosity stays local, it does more than support organizations. It strengthens communities. It builds trust. It creates opportunities. And it helps ensure that the values we care about today continue to shape our communities for years to come.
Thank you for being part of that work. It is an honor to serve alongside individuals and families who continue to invest in the future of our community through thoughtful, lasting philanthropy.
