Big Brothers Big Sisters - 2024
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters serving Riley County was awarded a $20,000 grant through the YES! Fund to support its Community-Based Match Support and Retention program. This funding has been instrumental in sustaining 116 active one-to-one mentoring matches, positively impacting 232 individuals—116 youth and 116 volunteer mentors.
Led by dedicated Match Support Specialists, the program has achieved a 71% retention rate among matches lasting one year or longer. Through an evidence-based approach emphasizing social-emotional learning, risk avoidance, and educational achievement, KSBBBS continues to create pathways for success for youth across the Manhattan area. All mentoring relationships are professionally case-managed and structured according to best practices to ensure enduring, positive outcomes.
Looking ahead, the organization plans to strengthen mentor recruitment strategies and expand the Life Skills Guide program, further deepening the impact of mentorship and enriching the lives of participating youth and volunteers.
One powerful example of this impact is the match between Big Brother Zac and Little Brother Ryan, who have been paired since February 2022. Having faced many of the same challenges that young people encounter today, Zac felt a strong calling to serve as a mentor and role model. Ryan, who was growing up without a father figure, was seeking guidance and support during a formative time in his life. Since the start of their match, Zac and Ryan have built a trusting, nonjudgmental relationship. Zac has been a steady presence through difficult moments, encouraging Ryan to strive for excellence as a student and community member. Together, they are laying the foundation for Ryan’s future success as a young adult.
