KSU Department of Modern Languages - 2024
The Kansas State University Department of Modern Languages received a $1,000 grant through the YES! Fund to support its bilingual literacy program, designed to foster a love of reading and cultural awareness among young children and their families.
Through this initiative, the department hosted five separate bilingual Spanish-English storytimes in collaboration with the Manhattan Public Library librarians and dedicated volunteers. The series, held in the Children’s Library story room, proved highly popular, attracting 248 children and parents, many of whom attended multiple sessions.
Each event included a bilingual story reading and an art or craft project related to the day’s book. Before leaving, every family received a complimentary book to encourage reading at home. 100 Spanish-language books authored and illustrated by award-winning Latinx creators were distributed.
Initially, the department planned to spread the YES! Funds over three program seasons. However, due to overwhelming interest, they paused after the initial season to reassess staffing, volunteer support, and materials to ensure program quality. They have since planned a second fall season beginning in September.
The YES! Fund grant has made it possible to purchase additional books and supplies for the art and craft activities, and 125 more books have already been ordered for future giveaways. This funding continues to help create meaningful literacy experiences that inspire curiosity and connection among families in the Manhattan community.
