Women & Philanthropy: Leading with Purpose Across Generations

Posted Thursday March 12, 2026

March is Women’s History Month, offering a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary role women play in shaping the future of philanthropy.

At the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation, we see this leadership every day. It appears in a retired executive supporting community initiatives through IRA gifts, a business leader building a culture of generosity within her company, and a young adult learning about community impact through her family’s donor-advised fund. Across our region, women are guiding charitable decisions and strengthening the communities they care about.

One powerful example is the Fairy Godmothers program, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. For two decades, this endowed fund has provided flexible support for women in the Greater Manhattan area, helping cover unexpected expenses such as car repairs or dental care when other resources fall short. The program continues to empower women to overcome barriers and pursue stability and opportunity.

Research shows that women’s influence in philanthropy will continue to grow. In the coming decade, trillions of dollars are expected to transfer to women through inheritance, earnings, and longevity. Increasingly, women are leading charitable decisions within families and communities, often approaching philanthropy with collaboration, empathy, and a focus on long-term impact.

At GMCF, we are honored to partner with women and families as they shape their philanthropic goals — whether through donor-advised funds, support for specific causes, or long-term commitments to organizations they care deeply about.

Women’s generosity continues to strengthen our community in powerful ways. As Fairy Godmothers celebrates 20 years of compassionate service, we look forward to the continued impact of women who lead with purpose and generosity across the Flint Hills.
