Closer to Home: Is It Time to Bring Your Donor-Advised Fund Local?
For many donors, a donor-advised fund (DAF) is one of the easiest and most flexible ways to organize charitable giving. It allows you to make a charitable contribution, receive any available tax benefits at the time of your gift, and recommend grants to the nonprofits and causes you care about over time.
Many people begin their charitable journey through a national charitable sponsor or commercial provider. But as their philanthropy grows, so does their desire for something more personal.
They want to know the nonprofits making a difference in their own backyard. They want guidance from people who understand the unique opportunities and needs of their community. They want to build a legacy that reflects not only what they care about—but where they call home.
That's where the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation can help.
More Than a Donor-Advised Fund
A donor-advised fund at GMCF offers the same flexibility and convenience many donors already enjoy, while adding something national providers can't always offer: local relationships.
Our team knows the organizations serving our communities, understands emerging needs, and works alongside donors to connect generosity with meaningful opportunities. Whether you're passionate about education, healthcare, the arts, conservation, youth programs, or another cause, we're here to help you make informed giving decisions that align with your values.
For many families, a donor-advised fund also becomes a way to involve children and grandchildren in charitable conversations, creating a lasting tradition of generosity for future generations.
Can You Move an Existing Donor-Advised Fund?
Yes—and many donors are surprised to learn just how simple the process can be.
If you already have a donor-advised fund with another provider, you can establish a donor-advised fund at GMCF and recommend a grant from your existing fund to transfer all or a portion of your charitable assets. Some donors choose to move their entire fund, while others begin by transferring a portion and continue supporting causes through both accounts.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach. The right decision depends on your charitable goals and how you'd like to engage with your philanthropy.
How the Process Works
Moving your donor-advised fund typically involves just a few simple steps:
- Meet with the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation to discuss your charitable goals.
- Establish your new donor-advised fund.
- Recommend a grant from your current donor-advised fund to your new GMCF fund.
- Begin supporting the nonprofits and causes that matter most to you—with a local philanthropic partner by your side.
Our team is available throughout the process to answer questions, coordinate details, and ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
