National Community Foundation Week: What Does a Community Foundation Really Do?
National Community Foundation Week, November 12–18, is an opportunity to take a closer look at the people, partnerships, and generosity that help strengthen our communities.
Every day, nonprofits are meeting important needs, donors are supporting causes they care about, and community members are finding ways to make a difference. But how do all these pieces come together?
That's where a community foundation comes in.
Established in 1989, National Community Foundation Week recognizes the important role community foundations play in connecting people, resources, and causes to address local challenges and build stronger communities.
At the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF), our mission is simple: To build relationships between donors and community needs.
But what does that actually look like?
What Is a Community Foundation?
A community foundation is a local public charity that helps people support the causes and organizations that matter to them.
At GMCF, we work with individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to turn charitable intentions into meaningful community impact.
Some donors want to support a specific nonprofit. Others are passionate about education, the arts, basic human needs, or improving their community for future generations. We help connect those interests with opportunities to give.
Through charitable funds, grantmaking, and partnerships, GMCF provides ways for generosity to support community needs today and well into the future.
How Does It Work?
You may have heard the phrase "Give today, impact forever." It's a simple way to describe one of the unique opportunities a community foundation can provide.
Donors contribute to charitable funds established to support causes they care about. Depending on the type of fund, those contributions may be invested to help grow charitable resources over time.
Grants and distributions from these funds support nonprofit organizations, community projects, scholarships, and other charitable purposes.
Some funds provide immediate support, while permanent endowments are designed to create a lasting source of charitable funding.
The result is a way for generosity to make a difference now while also helping build resources for future community needs.
It's About More Than Grantmaking
While grants are an important part of our work, a community foundation does much more than distribute charitable dollars.
GMCF helps donors explore their giving options, works alongside nonprofits, supports community initiatives, and connects people who share a commitment to making a difference.
Sometimes that means helping a donor establish a fund to support a favorite cause. Other times, it means bringing community partners together to address a shared challenge or helping nonprofit organizations access resources and connections that strengthen their work.
We also work alongside our affiliate community foundations, supporting local philanthropy in communities throughout our region.
These relationships are at the heart of what we do.
The People and Partnerships Behind the Work
Behind every grant, charitable fund and community initiative are people who care about the places they call home.
Our GMCF team works with donors, nonprofit leaders, volunteers, board members, and community partners to help turn ideas into action.
And while our staff plays an important role in making those connections, the real impact happens throughout our communities.
From organizations supporting families and providing essential services to those creating opportunities in education, arts and recreation, our nonprofit partners are doing meaningful work every day.
We are continually inspired by their commitment, creativity, and dedication to serving others. Our role is to help connect that work with the people and resources that can support it.
Why Community Foundations Matter
Every community has its own strengths, challenges, and opportunities. And those needs change over time.
Community foundations help create a place where local generosity can respond to today's priorities while also planning for tomorrow.
Whether someone gives $25, establishes a charitable fund, volunteers their time, or introduces a nonprofit to a potential partner, each act of generosity contributes to a stronger community.
That's what makes community philanthropy so powerful. It isn't about one person, one organization, or one gift. It's about what we can accomplish together.
