The Rhythm of Grantmaking

Posted Tuesday November 3, 2026

Like LITERAL clockwork, twice a year we either set our clocks forward or turn them back. In much the same way, our grantmaking follows a reliable and predictable rhythm. The second and third quarters tend to bring fewer grant programs and a slower pace, while the first and fourth quarters are typically our busiest, with more grant cycles underway and more applications to review.

This quarter was no exception. During Q4, we wrapped up grantmaking for the Morgan Community, Howe Family Foundation, YES! Fund, Eichman Family, Goldstein, and Deihl Arts, Community, and Humanities grant programs. And just as we saw an increase in applications this quarter, we also saw an increase in the needs being brought forward.

Behind every application is an organization working to meet a need, respond to a challenge, or create an opportunity for someone in our community. While the programs and requests may look different, they often share a common thread: a desire to make our community a better place for the people who call it home.

As we move through the final stages of grantmaking this year, we're reminded that our work is about more than reviewing applications and awarding grants. It's about understanding what is happening across our community, listening to the organizations closest to those needs, and recognizing where philanthropic support can make a difference.

We don't always have the answers, and we certainly can't meet every need that comes our way. But each grant cycle gives us another opportunity to learn more about our community, better understand the challenges facing our nonprofit partners, and consider how our investments can help move good work forward.

As we head toward the end of the year, our grantmaking calendar will begin to slow down, but the work happening across our community won't. Nonprofits will continue showing up, responding to needs, and finding ways to create meaningful change. Our role is to keep listening, keep learning, and remain thoughtful about how we can support that work.

After all, the rhythm of grantmaking may be predictable, but the needs and opportunities within our community are constantly evolving. That's what makes this work so important and always right on time!
