4th & Pierre Street Public Art RFQ – Portal:Manhattan
Falk Architects proposes a new public art installation called Portal: Manhattan for the intersection of 4th & Pierre in Manhattan, Kansas. This large-scale, interactive sculpture aims to serve as a symbolic gateway to the city, utilizing many existing site elements to ensure a cost-effective and durable design.
The project's centerpiece will be an 8-foot tall concrete tube mounted on the existing concrete platform. The tube, with a width of 4 feet and a wall thickness of 1 foot, will feature a circular design representing a timeless gateway. The Portal will be constructed from durable materials; the sculpture is intended to be interactive, allowing visitors to climb on it while providing an enduring presence in the public space.
The artwork will be surrounded by tall native grasses and native limestone ledge rocks, reflecting the natural beauty of the Flint Hills region. During the day, the sculpture will be painted in K-State purple and white, while at night, color-changing lights will accentuate its form, creating a striking visual display. The lighting will enhance the experience, offering a dynamic and engaging element for the public to enjoy. This project aims to deliver lasting, impactful public art for the City of Manhattan by working with local professionals and tradespeople.
