Pawnee Mental Health - 2022

Posted Thursday July 27, 2023

Since its establishment in 1959, the Pawnee Mental Health Center has been a vital resource in Manhattan. In 2022, the center received a significant grant from the YES! Fund, enabling them to acquire sensory toys and items for the children participating in the Youth Community Services (YCS) program. The YCS program caters to children coping with serious emotional disturbances (SED).

The incorporation of sensory bags into the YCS program has proven to be highly advantageous, as noted by counselors and staff. These bags contain various items, such as stretch balls and sensory stickers, which play a crucial role in calming emotions during overwhelming situations.

One staff member recounted an example illustrating the practical value of these sensory bags. The group's vehicle became stuck in a ditch during a camp activity. Fortunately, the staff member had the sensory backpack on hand, which contained sensory items for each of the five children in the van. This resource proved invaluable in helping the children remain calm while the staff worked to resolve the van situation.

The availability of these sensory toys and items has enhanced the YCS program, providing children with coping mechanisms and support to manage their emotions effectively. Thanks to the funding from the YES! Fund, the Pawnee Mental Health Center continues to make a positive impact on the well-being of the youth in the Manhattan community who are facing emotional challenges.
