GMCF Deihl Arts Grant Checklist

Preparing for a Successful Grant Application:

Before submitting a GMCF Deihl Arts Grant application, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete the following Pre-Submission Actions. These steps will help ensure your proposed public art installation is thoughtfully planned, compliant with regulations, and sustainable over time.

Pre-Submission Actions:

  • Evaluate Site and Safety Considerations.  When selecting a location for your public art installation, assess all factors related to public safety and local regulations. This includes city and county codes, sight lines for moving vehicles, pedestrian access, lighting, and any other elements that may affect the functionality or safety of the space.
  • Plan for Site Preparation and Durability. Ensure the proposed site can support a lasting installation. Consider materials and preparations such as:

    • Primer and paint specifications

    • Protective finishes to guard against vandalism and weather damage

    • Necessary landscaping, grading, or drainage

  • Clarify Ownership and Responsibilities. Clearly define the following:

    • Ownership of the land where the artwork will be installed

    • Ownership and copyright of the artwork itself

    • Anticipated lifespan of the installation

    • Responsible party for maintenance and, if needed, removal of the artwork

  • Consider the factual and/or historical relevance of the art installation.  Ensure the proposed installation has clear relevance—whether factual, historical, or cultural—to the community or location where it will reside.
  • Prepare a Detailed Budget.  Develop an initial budget that includes:
    • Installation costs

    • Long-term maintenance costs

    • Responsible parties for all expenses

  • Complete an Owner/Artist Agreement.  This is documentation outlining the mutual understanding between the artist(s) and property owner(s). Agreements should include:
    • Ownership of the property and artwork

    • Copyright ownership

    • Life expectancy of the installation

    • Maintenance plans and materials required (e.g., wall preparation, sculpture materials, paint, protective coatings)

    • Provisions for removal if necessary

  • The following specifics should be determined and included in the owner/artist agreement and grant application:
    • Ownership of the property on which the work of art is sited.
    • Ownership of copyright on the work of art.
    • Anticipated life expectancy and maintenance needs over the life of the work of art.
    • Materials required for artwork and maintenance, including wall materials and finishes, preparation work, primer, and paint or foundation preparation of land, plinth, sculpture material, and maintenance or removal of artwork.

Before submitting your application to the GMCF Deihl Arts and Humanities Committee, these considerations should be thoroughly discussed, agreed upon, and documented by all involved parties. Thoughtful preparation will strengthen your application and help ensure long-term success for your project.

Submission Requirements:

The GMCF Deihl Arts and Humanities Committee will evaluate each application based on the information provided. Applicants should ensure that all submitted materials accurately and thoroughly reflect the proposed project.

The submitted plan will serve as the official framework for the project and must be followed throughout its duration. Projects funded by the Deihl Arts Grant are expected to be completed within one year of grant acceptance.

Please be mindful that deviations from the submitted plan may impact continued eligibility or future funding considerations. Thoughtful planning and clear documentation are essential to a successful application.
